From a Constable to Prosecutor and Yet Charmaine Wagambie has a dream to be a Lawyer

 S/C Charmaine WAGAMBIE joined the RPNGC in 2011 at the age of 22 years old. Passed out in 2012 from Police Training College and got Posted to New Ireland Province.

Charmaine’s career path was different from her Late Biological Mother Julie Rita Givere. Late Julie Rita Givere is from a mix parentage of Binandere,Oro and Morobe Patrol Post, Morobe . She was one of the first pioneering Policewoman in the RPNGC, and she was attached with the sexual offences Squad, CID at Boroko Police Station at that time as a Detective Sergeant until her passing away on the 01st July 2009 in her line of duty.

Charmaine served the Island of Gold, and surrounding island for 6 years working with the Public Safety General Duties – Lihir Police Station.

After successfully completing the CAPS Units and passing the CAPS exam she was confirmed Constable in 2015. In 2017 she joined the Prosecution section - Lihir and was also promoted to First Constable.

In 2018, she transferred to Kavieng Police Station being the PPHQ. She joined prosecutions section and gained experience by going to court and observing her senior Prosecutors prosecute cases in the Criminal Courts of Law.

In 2019 there was a Prosecutions Qualifying Program Introduced to the section countrywide. Which is a 2-year distant program comprised of Theory and Practical programs.

Charmaine was then promoted to Senior Constable in 2020.She also successfully completed the Qualifying program in 2021 and graduated with a diploma in Police Prosecuting with other comrade prosecutors throughout the country in February 2023.

Prosecutions is a very challenging Job. You deal with Lawyers, Public Solicitors, Probation Officers, Juvenile Justice Officers, Magistrates in A Court Of Law. “You Must always put the Law to the Facts with your cases, hence, you will never lose your cases in court” says Charmaine.

Charmaine said, “My Job as a Prosecutor is to serve Justice. And Justice is served when A Guilty man is convicted and an Innocent man is Not!” 

S/C Wagambie says, “my biggest aim now is to Further my Studies at a School of Law. My father has always been encouraging me to take up further studies at the school of Law to Enhance My knowledge and I intend to fulfil that”.

During S/C Wagambie’s years of policing she has gained some attainments particularly with RPNGC women’s advisory Network (RPNGCWAN). In 2017 she was sponsored by PNG-APP with four other policewomen to attend the International Women and Law Enforcement conference in Cairns, Queensland, Australia.

This privilege was based on how the selected and other 83 applicants applied, stating how they would benefit from the conference. Selections were made based on the quality and effort of the application, stating the expressed desire to improve and gain knowledge, and the willingness to share those gains with others, and understanding Gender issues and change through education. 

Also in 2020 another similar program for the Pacific Islands chiefs of Police WAN exchange Program was implemented. S/C Wagambie applied and was successful thus selected to attend the WAN exchange Program in SUVA, Fiji, for a duration of One month.

S/C Wagambie’s advice to the young probation constables and constables is that “one day one of you will become supervisors and/or heading a section/shift and with roles, comes responsibilities. Always wear your uniform with Pride and Dignity. Our Uniform is NOT just a Uniform. It’s a Symbol of Trust and Authority. Our Uniform represents a commitment to Justice and a willingness to serve and Protect Lives and Properties”.
