PNG School Of Excellence Students sit STEM, OBE Exams

THE Grade 12 students attending Schools of Excellence in Papua New Guinea will be sitting two examinations (Stem and OBE).

Wawin School of Excellence principal, Pal Pu, said the challenge is now on the Stem students who are preparing to sit both the Stem and OBE examinations.

Pu advised parents to be lenient with their children as the examination is approaching and it would be a challenging time for the Stem students.

“We are preparing them for what is expected at the tertiary level,” he said.

“It is the foundation of what is to be taught at universities so, when they attend lectures at higher institutions, it would not be complicated for them.”

A senior teacher teaching Chemistry in both OBE and Stem , Jethro Rifireka, said they are preparing students to be confident and knowledgeable in knowing what they want to be in life through offering Stem education.

“When students graduate from here and go to universities, then they find it more comfortable at the tertiary level because they have been taught basics here,” he said.

“Otherwise, it’s more like a practical level and you have to involve students into practical.”

Meanwhile, Rifireka shared that the school does not have some of the equipment that is needed, to conduct experiments and to do practical projects.

“That’s the disadvantage,” Rifireka said.

“It’s tough for both teachers and students and we have sleepless nights to get this done and they are finally graduating.”

Rifireka said it was tough and challenging, but they did manage to complete the academic year and graduated 59 Stem students along with the rest of the students and are positive that the result will turn out great.
