PNG National Exams to Begin on Monday for 244,040 Students Nationwide
Papua New Guinea’s National Examinations officially commence today, marking a crucial period for thousands of students nationwide. Grade 10 students are the first to sit their papers from October 6 to 10, followed by Grade 12 from October 13 to 17, and Grade 8 from October 20 to 23.
Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra confirmed that a total of 244,040 students will participate in this year’s national assessments — including 87,500 in Grade 10, 36,540 in Grade 12, and 120,000 in Grade 8. The student nominations were verified through the department’s online data system, and all Grade 10 exam booklets have been dispatched to provinces, with remaining papers for other grades to follow shortly.

Dr. Kombra said that meticulous marking arrangements have been made to ensure fairness and consistency across all grades. Grade 10 scripts from the National Capital District will be marked immediately after the first exam before being sent to provincial centers. Grade 12 papers will be assessed in Port Moresby from October 19 to November 1, while Grade 8 scripts will be marked in their respective provinces.
The department is also working closely with provincial administrations and security agencies to maintain order and prevent disruptions during the examination period. Schools and students have been strongly warned against any form of malpractice, with penalties including non-certification for students, termination of teachers, or suspension of schools for up to three years.
“Cheating has been eliminated, and exam results now truly reflect students’ effort, providing reliable benchmarks for education,” Dr. Kombra stated. He extended his best wishes to all students sitting for their exams, encouraging them to remain focused and confident throughout the testing period.
