Yolanda Som

Yolanda Som is one of more than 40 Papua New Guineans who, since 2017, have been supported by Newcrest Mining Limited and the Australia Awards In-PNG Scholarships to study nursing and midwifery.

Yolanda graduated in 2020 and was part of the COVID-19 response team at Angau General Hospital, where she worked for almost a year, doing testing and vaccination. She was then assigned to the Care Nursery, where she worked for three months monitoring and caring for newborns.

“My family was so proud of me when I first got accepted into a tertiary institution and they are still proud of me, as they now have a nurse right at their doorstep,” she said.

Yolanda is passionate about providing good quality nursing care and is currently pursuing opportunities to work in pediatrics, one of the many personal goals she hopes to achieve in her career.
