Top STEM Students from PNG Embark on Overseas Pilot Training

Five top students from the National Schools of Excellence in Papua New Guinea departed the country on Saturday to begin pilot training overseas. The students, three girls and two boys, are all enrolled in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program.

The selected students are Christopher Willie from Port Moresby National School of Excellence, Esther Philip from Kerevat National School of Excellence, Maxine Mokae from Sogeri National School of Excellence, Pombra Koi from Aiyura National School of Excellence, and Talin Watch from Wawin National School of Excellence. They will undergo training at Advance Aviation Training in Nadi, Fiji.

Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra highlighted the success of the government’s STEM scholarship program, noting that last year, 311 Grade 12 students graduated from the six National Schools of Excellence. Of these, 170 students were selected to pursue their studies abroad under the STEM scholarship. Recently, 76 students were sent to the United States, followed by 30 to India, and now these five to Fiji. The remaining 55 scholarship recipients are expected to travel to China soon to further their careers in various STEM fields.

Dr. Kombra encouraged the scholarship recipients to stay focused and represent Papua New Guinea well abroad. “We are confident in your success and believe you will achieve your goals,” he said. “Remember that your future has been designed by God, and you have been chosen to be an ambassador for PNG in Fiji and beyond. Whether you become a pilot in PNG or elsewhere, never forget your roots and always remember that you represent Papua New Guinea. Your parents and guardians have supported you, and we have no doubt that you will succeed.”
