PNG's Top Performing Schools Report in Grade 12 - 2024

 The top-performing Grade 12 schools in Papua New Guinea for 2024 have been ranked based on their outstanding academic achievements. These schools have demonstrated excellence in their results, with many of their students achieving high grades. The rankings were determined using the Mean Rating Index (MRI), which evaluates the number of A, B, and C grades divided by the total student population. This method ensures fairness in assessing the schools’ academic performance. 

Note: Some schools not listed in the  top 10 schools below did  better by sending more students to universities . If schools were ranked based on the  number of students selected to the tertiary institutions, then none or fewer of the top schools below should have taken the top ranking.

1. Pitipas Secondary School

Pitipas Secondary School ranked first in the country due to its exceptional performance. Although the school sends only a small number of students to university, it managed to achieve the top spot because of its smaller student population and a higher percentage of students attaining top grades. This demonstrates the impact of quality education and individual focus in smaller schools.

2. Mt. Hagen Secondary School

Following closely in second place is Mt. Hagen Secondary School, which has consistently been a top contender in academic performance. Its larger student population did not hinder the school from producing numerous A and B grades, contributing to its high ranking.




3.  Paglum Secondary School

Ranked third is Mt. Paglum Secondary School, which has upheld its reputation for excellence. The school’s focus on academic rigor has resulted in a significant number of students achieving high grades, further boosting its position on the national ranking.


4. Marianville Secondary School

Marianville Secondary School, ranked fourth, has maintained its standing as a top-performing all-girls institution. Known for its discipline and academic standards, the school continues to produce students with excellent results, ensuring many are selected for further studies.

5. Lihir Secondary School

Lihir Secondary School has proven that even schools in remote areas can achieve remarkable results. Ranked fifth, the school’s dedication to academic excellence has resulted in many of its students receiving top grades and gaining university placements.


6. Busu Secondary School

In sixth place, Busu Secondary School has earned its spot among the top schools. Its focus on improving teaching and learning outcomes has paid off, with students performing exceptionally well in the national examinations.

7. Cameron Secondary School

Cameron Secondary School, ranked seventh, continues to be recognized for its commitment to academic achievement. The school’s strong emphasis on high-quality teaching has resulted in impressive performances from its students.


8. Butuka Academy

Ranked eighth, Butuka Academy has shown consistent progress in its academic outcomes. The school’s innovative approach to education has enabled its students to excel in their studies, making it a strong contender on the national stage.

9. St. Ignatius Secondary School

St. Ignatius Secondary School is ranked ninth, maintaining its reputation as one of the country’s leading institutions. The school’s balanced approach to academics and extracurricular activities has contributed to its high ranking.

10. Mercy Yarapos Secondary School

Closing the top ten is Mercy Yarapos Secondary School, which has achieved significant success in the national rankings. Its dedication to fostering academic excellence has ensured that many of its students receive university placements.

These schools represent the best-performing institutions in 2024, setting a high benchmark for others to follow. The ranking system based on the Mean Rating Index underscores the importance of quality education and highlights the correlation between student performance and school size.
