PNG Girls Encouraged to Pursue STEM Careers at ExxonMobil Event
Papua New Guinea’s future female engineers were inspired this week when ExxonMobil PNG hosted 75 ninth-grade students from five Port Moresby schools for its “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” at the LNG Plant in Caution Bay.
The initiative, now in its second year, is designed to spark girls’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Under the theme “Design Your Future,” the participants explored problem-solving and innovation through hands-on experiments and team activities.
Guided by 42 mentors from ExxonMobil’s Women in Energy Network, the students gained first-hand exposure to the work of engineers in the energy industry. They also heard from Papua New Guinean professionals who shared stories about their career journeys.
ExxonMobil PNG Chairman and Managing Director, Dinesh Sivasamboo, commended the students for their teamwork and creativity, saying these qualities are essential for success.
“It’s great to see how quickly you’ve built friendships and worked together to solve real-world challenges,” Mr. Sivasamboo said. “These skills will help you thrive in your future careers.”
He added that Papua New Guinea’s energy industry is growing, creating many opportunities for future engineers, and encouraged the students to stay focused on their studies.
For many, the experience was eye-opening. “I didn’t think much about taking on engineering, but after today, I might have a change of mind,” said Gordon Secondary School student Zillar Naku Pa’aka.
