Nero, a former Port Moresby National School of Excellence student, was among 10 STEM scholars announced last week at the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby. He said the opportunity aligns perfectly with a passion he has carried since childhood.
“I’ve always been fascinated with aircrafts, planes, helicopters, even rockets,” he said. “So, when I saw aerospace engineering, it was an easy choice. It’s something not offered here, and I’m really passionate about it.”
He is currently enrolled in mining engineering at the PNG University of Technology and will depart early next year after completing pre-departure requirements. Nero admitted to feeling a mix of excitement and nerves but remains focused on returning home with skills he believes will contribute to national progress.
Raised by a single parent, he said the journey has not been easy but hopes his achievement inspires others facing similar challenges. “Gideon's story shows how hard work and belief can turn big dreams into reality.”
