About Grade 11 Selections in Papua New Guinea
Grade 11 selections in Papua New Guinea are carried out each year to place eligible Grade 10 students into secondary schools, national high schools, and Schools of Excellence. The process is coordinated by the National Department of Education and determines which students progress into upper secondary based on their academic performance and school choices.

Eligibility for Grade 11 Placement
To qualify for Grade 11 selection, a student must:
- Complete Grade 10 at a registered school.
- Sit the national Grade 10 examinations.
- Obtain results that meet the required cut-off levels set by the Department.
- Submit school choices through the official selection process.
Students with strong academic results and appropriate subject combinations have a better chance of securing placement, especially in competitive institutions.
How the Selection Process Works
The selection process is done centrally using the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS). Student marks are entered, processed, and ranked according to:
- Academic performance
- Availability of space at schools
- School choices submitted by students
- Provincial quotas (where applicable)
The system automatically allocates students to schools based on merit and the number of spaces available. High-performing students are also considered for placement in the School of Excellence (SOE), which has stricter academic entry requirements.
Selection to a School of Excellence
Placement in a School of Excellence is highly competitive. These institutions aim to groom top-performing students for tertiary study in science, technology, and leadership fields. Selection is based mainly on:
- Top-tier academic results
- Merit ranking
- Space availability
Only a small percentage of students meet the criteria each year, making SOE selection one of the most sought-after achievements.

Once the selection process is completed, the Department publishes the full lists for:
- Secondary schools
- Schools of Excellence
The lists include the names of selected students and their allocated schools. Provinces may also release their own confirmed lists.
