K2 million fee subsidy for tertiary students from Gazelle , PNG

THE Gazelle development authority has approved K2 million school fee assistance for tertiary students from the Gazelle district of East New Britain, Papua New Guinea .

PNG's Gazelle MP and Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Jelta Wong announced this recently.

Wong said the DDA had approved the funding assistance under the tertiary students school fee assistance programme.

He said the programme rolled over from last year and was expected to begin this month.

He said the funding increased by K1 million for this year.

“Applications will open today (Monday) and will close on Feb 10, therefore, I am encouraging students from the district attending tertiary institutions to go to their local level government offices and obtain application forms,” Wong said.

He said officers for the programme would help students fill in the forms.

He said the programme also recognised the effort of those in the academic excellence scholarship (AES) category.

He said they would be paid K500 as an encouragement from the district to maintain their academic performances.

He said they would not be assisted with fees as parents would pay five per cent while the Government would meet the balance of 95 per cent.

Wong said those in the higher education contribution assisting scheme (Hecas) category would receive 30 per cent fee subsidies.

The DDA had also approved that self-sponsored students would be assisted with 50 per cent of their fees.
